Before the night of the full moon party we warmed up with a Jungle Rave party. The coolest thing about this party is that you have to walk way out into the jungle to find it! Eventually we got to it, the party was in a club surrounded by trees. Of course being a rave it had lots of flashing lights, glowing colors, intense music and lots of buckets…
Wait a minute!
I haven’t talked about buckets yet! What kind of blog is this!?
In thailand the most popular choices for alcohol is beer:
Sangsom (which taste like candy mixed with coke, my favorite)
Or buckets!!
Buckets are basically sandbuckets that you mix in all sorts of crazy drinks, usually with stuff like coke, vodka, redbull and sangsom. You can even get more tropical buckets in other places with stuff like pineapple juice mixed in. A bucket by itself will get you pretty smashed so it’s good to share with friends, which is why they give you lots of straws.
Anyway let’s skip to the full moon party.
Years ago a group of 20-30 travelers decided the best place to see the full moon was in Ko Phangan. They set up a party on the crescent moon shaped beach of Haad Rin to enjoy it. Word of the party slowly spread and grew year after year and now about 22 years later the party brings in between 8,000-25,000 (depending on the season) travelers from around the world! Some say it’s the ultimate party experience!
Whether it’s the ultimate or not I can’t say but it is an absolutely insane experience. The beach gets absolutely packed to the core and all the beach side bars open up towards the water for the intense celebration. Each bar along the beach plays different music, so you can move along until you find the perfect song. Everyone danced with no inhibitions it truly was a place to let loose and go crazy!
Before the party we all loaded ourselves with awesome body paint which glows under a lot of the lights on the beach.
It was really cool to party with so many different types of people from so many places in the world. Everyone was having a blast! There really was a LOT of people!
During the party lots of awesome (and dangerous) things were brought out for entertainment. There was fire limbo, and a giant fire skipping rope! Yes people got burnt!
There were also fire breathers and jugglers.
We were warned before the party not to start drinking until at least midnight so that we could make it for the duration, and that was awesome advice! Everywhere you looked there were people passing out in bad locations. The worst was the guy who passed out lying on the elevated stage during a rave song. People soon learned to dance around him.
The party raged on through the entire night, anytime we got tired we would just go grab some snacks at a nearby food stand and chill out for a bit. Along the beach many bars were set up, each playing a different style of music so you could always find what you wanted. I think I danced at every single bar at least once.
One of the coolest parts of the party was when the sun began to rise. It’s an awesome feeling when a party is still going crazy as the night comes to an end. All of us who were still standing met up to dance on a huge stage as it turned into daytime.
I managed to keep going until about 9:00am when I took a taxi boat back home and slept for a looong time.
Overall it was a really unique and interesting experience. I’m sure it will be many years, if ever that I party with that large of a group again. I think they said the full moon party I was at had around 15,000 people.
What a night.
